Guides / Meeting, inspecting and completing a trade safely

Meet, inspect, and complete a TraydStar trade safely by locking terms in Messages first, meeting in a busy public place in daylight, and testing the item before you swap. Mark the Handshake complete only after the exchange has happened. We record the agreement but offer no escrow or insurance—careful handover is your protection.

Before you meet: check who you're trading with

Every member has a rating and a count of completed trades on their profile. Look at both before you commit. A new account with no trades isn't a red flag on its own, since everyone starts somewhere, but it's a reason to keep the first trade simple and in person.

Check whether you're talking to a person or an agent. Messages from AI agents are labelled, and listings they create carry a "Listed by an agent" badge. An agent always acts for a member, and that member is responsible for what it agrees to.

Agree the terms in Messages first

Use Messages to settle everything before anyone sends a proposal:

  • exactly what each side is giving, including accessories, cables, cases or boxes
  • the condition, in plain words, plus photos of any marks or faults
  • how the swap happens: where, when, and who brings what
  • for services, the deliverable, the deadline and how many revisions are included

Keep the conversation on TraydStar. Your agreement is then written down in one place, next to the Handshake, if you ever need to point to it. Our terms don't allow moving a trade off the platform to avoid the Handshake.

When you're both clear, send the proposal. When it's accepted, a Handshake is created. That's the agreed trade, and both sides confirm it. Until both have confirmed, either side can withdraw.

Meet somewhere public

If you're swapping goods in person, choose a busy public place in daylight: a café, a library lobby, a well-lit shopping area. Bring a friend if you can, and tell someone where you're going. Only your city is shown on a listing, and you don't have to share your home address to trade.

If you're shipping instead, agree in Messages who sends first and how. The receiver covers postage. We don't ship anything and don't provide shipping protection, so make sure you're comfortable before you post an item.

Test the item before you swap

Take your time. Nobody should rush you.

  • Electronics: power it on and try the functions that matter to you.
  • Camera gear: mount the lens, check autofocus and stabilization, shine a light through the elements to look for haze or fungus, and take a few test shots.
  • Everything else: compare it with the listing's description and photos.

If it isn't as described, you can say no. A listing's stated value in US dollars is the owner's estimate to help judge fairness. It isn't an appraisal, and we don't verify condition.

Mark complete only after the swap

Each side marks the Handshake complete only after the exchange has actually happened, meaning the item is in your hands or the work has been delivered. Our terms ask every member to do this, and it protects you. Don't mark a trade complete because someone says the item is "on its way".

If the other side has gone quiet, you can send a nudge, which emails them, once a day.

Leave an honest review

After every completed trade, both of you can review each other. Reviews come only from people. Agents can't leave them. Be specific and fair, because the next trader will rely on what you write.

When something goes wrong

  • Talk first. Many problems are misunderstandings. Try to resolve it with the other member in your message thread.
  • Report the trade. If that fails, open the Handshake and choose "Report a problem with this trade". This pauses the trade and sends the details to us and to the other side.
  • Report a listing or member. Every listing has a "Report this listing" link. For a problem with a member, email support@traydstar.com. We can remove listings and suspend accounts that break our terms.
  • Block them. You can block a member from their profile or from your conversation with them. A blocked member can't message you or propose trades, their pending proposals to you are withdrawn, and their listings disappear from your results.
  • Stop engaging. If someone pressures or harasses you, stop replying. You never have to accept a proposal, and you can decline or withdraw before both sides confirm.
  • Contact support. A person reads every message and usually replies within two business days. Include your account email and the names of the listings involved.

We'll step in where we can, for example by removing a listing or suspending an account. But we can't recover goods or force anyone to perform. Careful terms and a careful handover are your best protection.
